Fire Indicator Panel (FIP Systems)
The Fire Indicator Panel (also known as a FIP System) is the hub of the fire alarm system in a building. It is usually located on the ground floor near the entrance close to the nearest road.

The panel may be located in the cabinet or on a wall. On the panel is a number of lights and buttons. These lights indicate which fire sensor has been activated in the building.

The FIP System will automatically notify the fire brigade of an alarm when one of its sensors locates a fire. The FIP will usually talk to the EWIS (where installed) and notify the building occupants that they need to evacuate.

Emergency Warning System
If an emergency is declared, all affected Zone Wardens will be informed and they, in turn, will inform occupants of their areas of any action required. Depending upon the circumstances, this communication may be through the use of an Emergency Warning System.

Emergency Warning Systems provides an audible sound throughout buildings, in which a two stage system is utilised. The Alert Signal (repetitive 420Hz tone burst) is sounded automatically on activation of the fire alarm system or manually for other emergencies. The Chief Warden then manually activates the Evacuation Signal (repetitive 500Hz to 1200Hz ramped tone) if required. The Emergency Warning System also provides public address capability, which may be used by the ECO to initiate evacuation or other required action.

Evacuation drills should be conducted at least once a year. These will not necessarily be fire drills - other types of emergencies, such as bomb threats should be used on special occasions. Advanced notice will be given and all persons present in the building should be expected to participate.

Fire Hydrants
Andrews Fire Protection offers fire hydrants as an active fire protection measure. Fire hydrants utilise water provided in most urban, suburban and rural areas with municipal water service to enable firefighters to tap into the municipal water supply to assist in extinguishing a fire.

A hose is attached to the fire hydrant then the valve is opened to provide a powerful source of water. Most fire hydrant valves are not designed to trottle the water flow; they are designed to be operated full-on or full-off.

Appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves, a helmet and face shield must be worn when operating fire hydrants.

Drencher Systems
Drencher systems provide the necessary curtain of water for protection against internal and external exposure to fire. Drencher systems are used to separate one risk from the other in case of a fire, or to check the spread of fire, for example to limit the fire not to spread beyond a certain volume.

A room should be provided for storing the tank and the pumps. Suitable locations shouold be allowed at ground level for installing the drencher valves and drencher inlets (ie, quick coupling for receiving water boosted from fire engines).

Deluge Valves, Street Valves and Valve Overhauls
The deluge valve is the automatic water control valve that is used to control water flow into the deluge, preaction and special types of fire protection systems in response to a fire. Deluge fire protection systems are normally used in special hazard installations where an entire area application of water is required for protection.

Typical applications may include flammable liquid handling and storage areas, aircraft hangars and other high-hazard installations where water is the most effective extinguishing agent.

Deluge systems employ open sprinklers or spray nozzles attached to a piping system. The system is connected to a water supply through the deluge valve. This valve is opened by the operation of a fire detection system installed in the same areas as the open sprinklers or nozzles.

Deluge systems may be activated by wet or dry pilot sprinklers, or electric detectors. When the deluge valve opens, water flows into the piping system and discharges from all open sprinklers and nozzles.

Automatic Smoke Shutters
Automatic Smoke Shutters are designed to limit smoke spread in public places, such as elevator lobbies, corridors, etc. Mounted above the ceiling, automatic smoke shutters coil out of sight and yet, after activation of automatic closing, they become effective smoke and draft barriers. The smoke shutter is often used with a smoke detector, heat detector or other alarm system that starts the release device.

As a secondary system of activation, fusible links are also provided, which cause the smoke shutter to close upon link melting at a controlled rate of decent.

Andrews Fire Protection smoke shutters can be supplied in widths to 3048mm and heights to 3137mm, equipped with perimeter smoke seals using a midget slat.

Booster Pumps
Booster pumps are used in applications where the normal system pressure is low and needs to be increased. Priming introduces fluid into the pumping chamber to create the pressure differential needed for pumping at a rated service. Self-priming pumps create and maintain a sufficient vaccum level to draw fluid into an inlet with no external assistance. Typically, booster pumps are used in water systems or applications that have now contamination. They have a variety of commercial, municipal and military applications and are used in a range of industries, including aerospace, mining and food processing.

Our booster pumps can transport different types of media, including abrasive, acidic, corrosive, combustible and hazardous materials. Others use wastewater, salt water, sewage, sludge, ash or rendering wastes from food processing. Liquids, liquids with solids (slurry) and liquid metal are also used to increase system pressure. Depending upon the application, other media used include gasoline, diesel, fuel, oil, lubricants, chemicals and coolants.

Fire Extinguishers
Portable fire extinguishers can put out or contain fires that may start in your home or office. It is important to know which extinguisher to use for a particular fire and how to use an extinguisher correctly.

Each type of extinguisher may be rated for one or more classes of fire. Some extinguishers can be extremely dangerous to use on certain classes of fire and can increase the fire and threaten your safety. Some extinguishers are also considered ineffective against certain classes of fire.

There are size classes of fire, A, B, C, D, E and F. Portable fire extinguishers are identified by their labels and colouring. Water is the most commonly used extinguishant for Class A fires involving carbonaceous materials such as wood, paper and textile. Water extinguishers cool the fire by removing the heat needed to sustain burning. Foam fire extinguishers with AFFF additive, have the effect of improving a water based extinguisher, enabling it to fight Class A and B fires. Wet Chemical extinguishers contain a special potassium acetate based agent for use on fires involving cooking oils and fats.

Smoke Detectors/Thermal Detectors
A smoke alarm senses smoke and can alert you to a fire to give you time to escape. The alarm can be wired into the household electrical mains (with a battery back-up), or be battery operated only. Wired-in alarms can be more reliable in the longer term.

There are two main types of smoke alarms for your home; photoelectric and ionisation. While both types of alarms are effective for detecting flaming fires, the photoeletric smoke alarm is more effective for detecting smoke from smouldering fires.

Many homes have an ionisation type of alarm installed, however fire authorities recommend that photoelectric type smoke alarms should be installed in bedrooms and adjacent hallways.
